Exam season can be stressful and intense with everyone juggling different revision and exam schedules, but while you're focusing on your own studies, it's just as important to stay mindful of the people around you.
Whether you're in a shared flat, a busy library or just passing others on campus, here's how to keep things respectful during exam season.
Keep the noise down
Late-night cramming might be your thing, but not everyone appreciates your 2am Spotify playlist or clattering around the kitchen for a midnight snack.
Make sure to use headphones, shut doors softly (especially in the early morning or late at night), and avoid loud conversations in communal areas.
Respect shared spaces
Messy kitchens, overflowing bins, and loud FaceTimes in the lounge? Not ideal.
During exam season, everyone's energy is stretched so it's important to make your shared space feel less chaotic by cleaning up after yourself, giving people space if they look like they need it, and saving social celebrations for after exams wrap up – for everyone.
Studying in the library?
As a shared space for everyone in the same boat, there's a few simple rules every studier should follow in the library:
- Keep your phone on silent or vibrate.
- Avoid long phone calls or chatting at study desks.
- Don't hog a desk for hours if you're taking breaks elsewhere.
Don't compare stress levels
Everybody's experience during exam season can be different, from their revision or coursework load to their coping mechanisms. Whether someone has one exam or five, stress is personal.
Instead of falling into the trap of comparing struggles, offer support, or at the very least a listening ear.
Celebrate responsibly
Finished your last exam? Congrats! You deserve to celebrate. Just be mindful that not everyone is done yet.
If you’re planning a party or loud hangout, give your housemates a heads-up or save it for when everyone’s crossed the finish line.
A smile, cup of tea or a quiet night might mean the world to someone else. Let's get through exam season with less stress and more support – you've got this!
